 IQ testing began fairly recently, relatively speaking, with Alfred Binet's design of an intelligence test for French schoolchildren in 1904. High IQ organizations had their start in 1946 after the chance meeting of two men on a train. Roland Berrill, a barrister, and Lance Ware (right), a scientist and law student, struck up a conversation about their mutual interest in intelligence measurement through IQ tests. They stayed in contact and soon after determined to start a society for those with high IQ, for which they chose the name Mensa (from the Latin for table, and invoking the Latin for mind "mens" and month "mensis").
Mensa has steadily grown into an international society, open to anyone with an IQ test score in the top 2% of the population. Other organizations for the highly intelligent have sprung up along the way. This section privides information about some of those, like Mensa, that have a prominent profile.

Mensa's original aims were, as they remain today, to create a non-political society free from all racial or religious distinctions.
Mensa | Official objectives:
- to identify and foster human intelligence for the benefit of humanity
- to encourage research in the nature, characteristics, and uses of intelligence
- to provide a stimulating intellectual and social environment for its members
The society welcomes people with an IQ test score in the top two per cent of the population, measured either on an official Mensa IQ test or similar recognized test. Mensa members come from all walks of life, almost every job, profession and age group. The essence of Mensa membership is fun and intellectual stimulation. Local groups often meet on a regular basis.

 Urban academies and intellectual salons devoted to the informal pursuit of the arts and sciences flourished throughout Europe and North America during the European Enlightenment. Modern universities and influential research foundations ultimately displaced these communities of amateur scholars, adding a degree of rigor and formality, but subtracting a sense of boundless curiosity, collaboration, and ingenuity. The former spirit of the intellectual salon and the unweildy entrance procedures for other high IQ organizations inspired Nathan Haselbauer (right) to found The International High IQ Society (previously the New York High IQ Society).
The International High IQ Society takes the tolerance, moral engagement, and faith in the free play of ideas of the intellectual salons and applies them to a contemporary setting. It is an egalitarian community full of opportunities for its members to share the life of the mind, unencumbered by the restrictions of physicality.
For membership, the International High IQ Society requires proof of IQ test score in the top 5% of the population.

 Ronald K. Hoeflin (right) deserves special note in any discussion of high IQ tests and societies. Hoeflin has founded several such societies including the Mega society which requires a "1 in a million" IQ score for qualification. According to its website it has twenty-six members.

In 2008, a study by a team from the Universities of Michigan and Bern1 reported that an intensive period of brain training with the "dual n-back" working memory exercise could significantly increase intelligence. (The researchers calculated the fluid intelligence increase from the number of correct answers given to a standard set of IQ test questions2.)
